Aaron at Area 15 toiled for quite some time testing out the fully pink spectrum including a few custom blends he made and landed on a new concoction that we're calling Pink Glow. Mistakes are made during almost every production run, and while we usually keep them to a minimum, sometimes the mistake ends up being bigger than we thought. The end of our Titanium Bolt upper body manufacturing run encountered one of those mistakes, we failed to catch damage to the tool that taps the threads for the clips. The result, over 200 parts that needed secondary machining AND more importantly custom clips to make them usable. Things were busy back then, and we shuffled the parts into a holding area to fix at a later date. Well that date is upon us, and the fixes we've made on these pens are pretty big, at least for us.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Tumbled Titanium Bolt Complete Edition features a body, knob, clip, and fasteners all made of titanium. The clip is a riff on our standard clip, that's been widened with a center slot cut in it to allow for clip flexibility. These parts were water-jet cut from a sheet, and we then made a custom hand press and each clip is pressed into shape by hand in the shop. The screws are source from a knife supply company that specializes in titanium fasteners, and utilize our T8 Torx head. The only two \"parts\" that are not titanium are the standard Pilot G2 refill and our custom spring. Using the phrase \"labor of love\" for a tool like this seems strange, but we've never put this much hand work into a standard style release before, but the results are well worth it. These look and feel amazing. The Mother of Pearl finish was initially an experiment Aaron did with a light coat of FX series metallic over a white base coat, using primarily FX Mardi Gras which features purple-to-green color shift metallic. He changed the coating a bit during Batch #2 (second experimental coat), he added additional metallic into the final coat and sprayed it heavier, creating the appearance of a slight darkening of the base white which gave the appearance of slightly aged ivory. For Batch #3, he brightened the white back up, and added a final coat of gloss clear to the finish which makes everything POP. The color shift from purple through pink to green is still present and in certain light, all of the metallic is stripped away leaving a bright white pen.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Mother of Pearl Dragonskin EDK is closer to our first release of this finish, a true MoP without the aged look of Ivory. The base coat of white is nice and even, providing an amazing canvas for the metallic FX Cerakote. Aaron has outdone himself with his application process, moving through test batches to get the best mix of the different FX metallics to get a blend of color shift that comes through on this pen. Red, pink, green, orange, purple, almost the whole spectrum of color shift is present depending on the type of light and angle. These are really incredible, very hard to photograph, but stunning in hand. The best part, this type of multi-coat process leaves a nice texture on the pens so they aren't slippery when writing. The RKiV is a small-format, click-style pen similar to the EDK but with a new look and design that allows us to shorten the manufacturing time, reduce product lost due to anodize issues, and is based around a ballpoint refill we've never featured before. The vision for this pen was to create something that wasn't a direct riff on one of our existing pens. The EDK used a combination of the Retrakt upper body and a shortened Bolt grip. The Modal uses a Bolt grip and the Pocket Modal uses an EDK grip. For the RKiV we took smaller elements (tip taper, micro-rings, etc) and built from that aspect for a single-piece pen designed to use a standard oil-based ballpoint refill. The material cut smooth and precise on our Swiss lathes, and during the sanding and polishing showed the true luster of the material. Hand-polishing during the final step shows a brilliant chatoyance throughout the copper swirls which is bolstered by the black depth of the base material.
